Used as a natural anti-depressant, it can also relieve pain and cause a mild sedating effect.
Featured on the BBC2 "Alternative medicine" TV Show on 7 February 2006. Kathy Sykes investigated what are known as super herbs; herbs that in clinical trials perform as well, if not better, than their pharmaceutical competitors - St. John's Wort was one such product as long as it was taken with a high Hyperforin content.
Laakmann et al 1998 undertook a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre study on 147 male and female patients with mild to moderate depression and over 1 42 day period results were statistically significant in improvement for the patients receiving the Hyperforin. Other studies have also supported these findings (Chatterjee et al 1998, Bhattacharya et al 1998).
